Discover a Dawlish Warren Holiday for Outdoor Loving Adults

Are you a couple planning an autumn break? Would you enjoy a relaxing stay where you can soak up stunning scenery whilst enjoying the hospitality and warm welcome of the West Country?

If you want to get outdoors this autumn, then a holiday to Dawlish Warren has plenty to offer. Need a bit more convincing? Here are three highlights that you can look forward to…

1. Explore the fantastic scenery

You could say that Dawlish Warren is the perfect outdoor location (OK, we’re biased!) But here’s why…

Dawlish Warren is located at the mouth of the beautiful Exe Estuary. Due to its location, you can enjoy a unique mix of natural scenery. Firstly, there’s the stunning sandy beach, which is backed by sand-dunes. The beach has a blue flag rating and is an idyllic spot for a stroll. What’s more, if you visit when the children are at school you’ll find plenty of space to just roam free.

In addition, Dawlish Warren is renown for its stunning nature reserve. The reserve is teeming with birds and plant life making it a perfect spot to sit and watch.

Finally, when you’re outside you can enjoy some good West Country sea air.

Bliss.

2. Just walk…

If you enjoy walking, you’ll be spoilt for choice with the nearby South West Coast Path and the Exe Valley Way.

A highly enjoyable day-trip is the walk between Dawlish Warren and Exmouth. It’s the perfect route to soak up the beauty of your holiday destination.

Starting in Dawlish Warren, pack a flask so you can enjoy a spot of bird-watching. The nature reserve is a site of special scientific interest and covers a vast area of 500 acres. You’ll discover hundreds of flowering plants as well as a rich population of birds including wildfowl and waders.

Leaving the Warren, join the Exe Valley Way. This is an easy, scenic route that follows the Exeter Canal and the River Exe. Simply head towards Cockwood for an amble around the harbour and a quick drink in one of the inns. Next, join the road and carry onto the lovely village of Starcross. One of the highlights here is the Italianate pumping station. This is the best surviving building from Brunel’s Atmospheric Railway.

From Starcross you can take the foot passenger ferry across the estuary to Exmouth. The ferry runs from early April until the end of October (although do check before heading out) and a typical crossing is between 15-20 minutes.

Once in Exmouth you’ll find lots of things to see and do:

  • You can stroll along the two miles of sandy beach
  • Or try some adrenaline pumping water sports
  • Travel back to a different age and marvel at the stunning geology of the 250 million year old cliffs (a UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site)
  • Hire a bike and cycle the Exe Estuary Way
  • Take a boat trip
  • Do a spot of souvenir shopping
  • Chill out in a little café
  • Or just sit and enjoy a spot of people watching as the world goes by

Alternatively, you can continue from Starcross to the bustling streets of Exeter. This easy route is 8 miles and follows the Exe Valley Way. Highlights include the herd of deer that roam through the grounds of Powderham Castle. Once in Exeter, you can wander around the quay – even head into the city for a spot of sightseeing.

3. Play golf

Dawlish Warren is also an ideal base for a golfing break. There are many challenging golf courses in the local area where you can play as a visitor. The closest courses to Dawlish Warren include The Warren Golf Club, Teignmouth Golf Club, and Woodbury Park. All three are 18-holes and are sure to challenge your skills. What’s more, due to their location, you’ll enjoy sensational views as you get in a few rounds. Perfect.

Book a lodge or caravan for a cosy self-catering break

Welcome Family Holiday Park has a range of accommodation for you to choose from.

You’ll find Spanish style lodges, self-catering bungalows, cosy caravans, and spacious apartments. What’s more, because some of our accommodation is dog-friendly, your “best friend” doesn’t need to be left at home and can enjoy a break too.

We look forward to giving you a warm welcome when you visit for your autumn break in the beautiful West Country.
