Top Family-Friendly Food Events in South Devon 2019

South Devon is a gourmet’s delight, boasting some of the best local produce in the country, so it’s no surprise that food events are popular in this beautiful area on the southwest coast of England.

Food festivals provide a fantastic day out for the family and are a great way of introducing budding foodies to the delights of fresh and delicious local fare.

Here’s a look at some unmissable family-friendly food events taking place in the coming months.

Night Market at Exeter Quay

Thursday 3rd May 2019 then on every 1st Thursday of the month, 5.30pm – 9.00pm (May – Sept inclusive)

Teignmouth Farmers Markets

Every last Saturday of the month in The Triangle from 10am until 2pm.

Cullompton Spring Fest (13 April)

Cullompton Spring Festival is a food, craft and music festival celebrating local farmers, producers and artisans.  Enjoy the smells, tastes, and artistic creativity, including music at venues throughout Cullompton Town.

Exeter Festival of South West Food and Drink 2019 (4-6 May)

This 3-day festival celebrates the very best of food and drink in the southwest, bringing together local producers and the area’s tops chefs for a culinary extravaganza.  As well as various demonstrations and pavilions to explore, the festival also provides hands-on fun for the whole family to enjoy.

Salcombe Crab Festival – Crabfest (5 May)

Crabfest is not just an excellent opportunity for seafood lovers to get together and crack open some fine tasting crabs. More than that, Crabfest has become a vibrant showcase for the local fishing, food, drink and tourism industries at the heart of our unique area.  With hands-on cookery demonstrations by award-winning chefs, crab picking masterclasses, crab pot making, live music and more, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Devon County Show (16-18 May)

The Devon County Show is the biggest event in the Devon calendar.  Enjoy the most mouthwatering food and drink the West Country has to offer, with an incredible array of food to snack on or take home, food to try and food to watch, foodies will not be disappointed. Bigger than a Premier League football pitch a giant marquee is home to an array of craft stands, a floral art competition, home baking competition, flower and gardening stands and the fantastic Lifton Tea Shop!

The show celebrates all things Devon, with livestock competitions and a packed programme of entertainment in the Main Arena including a Motorbike Stunt Display Team, Shetland Pony Performance Team, Top Class Showjumping and more.

Kingsbridge Food and Music Festival (31 May – 2 June)

This free festival showcases delicious, locally-produced food and brilliant live music in the South Hams town of Kingsbridge.  Explore the diverse range of culinary and acoustics treats lined up in this three day food and music extravaganza!  This is a family festival with a ‘Kids Zone‘ offering free work shops with some brilliant local outdoor activity groups as well as craft sessions, face painting and a bouncy castle.

Flavour Fest (31 May – 2nd June)

The south west’s largest food and drink festival returns to the city centre Piazza from Friday 31 May to Sunday 2 June 2019.​ ​The weekend event  will see the Piazza transformed with stalls brimming with local delicacies, live music and a marquee bar. With more than 100 traders showcasing the best regional produce – as well as cookery demonstrations from talented local and celebrity chefs – organisers are hoping to yet again attract more than 100,000 food lovers to the south west’s largest free food and drink festival.

The Best of Devon: Chilli, Cheese and Chocolate Festival – Double Locks Exeter (1 June)

Devon produces some amazing food and drink and this festival celebrates three of Devon’s tastiest.  The stars of this show will be the traders who have been hand-picked to showcase their foods and products. Whether it’s spicy chillies, sweet chocolates or a rich Cheese there will be something to please everyone. This is a family friendly daytime event with an array of garden games and a bouncy castle to keep the kids busy. One of the highlights will be the chilli eating competition which anyone can enter and will be judged by our experts.

The event is held in the beautiful ‘Double Locks’ pub on the canal side in Exeter. On offer from them is a great cookout BBQ and over 4 different bars with a huge variety of Ales, Gins and many other alcoholic and soft drinks. Plymouth Seafood Festival (14-15 September)

The Barbican and Sutton Harbour in Plymouth will come alive with a celebration of locally sourced and sustainably caught, high quality seafood.  Now in its eighth year, the Plymouth Seafood Festival will be offering a weekend full of delicious dishes for all the family to enjoy as well as hands-on activities, including children’s cookery fun, where they can touch and taste local produce.  Plymouth is the first city in the world to be awarded the Fish2Fork Blue City status for its commitment to sourcing sustainable fish.

Abbfest (20-22 September)

This food, music and beer festival on the outskirts of Newton Abbot is in it 14th year.  The main aim of the festival is to to raise funds for local charities and by doing so promote local drink, food, craft and entertainment. Every year Abbfest hosts a wonderful weekend full of live music, locally produced beer & cider, chef demonstrations and a food & craft market full of local artisan producers.  The are also lots of activities especially for the kids.

Powderham Food Festival (5-6 October)

Devon’s most exciting foodie event, Powderham Food Festival, will return again this 5th and 6th October for its eighth year. Set in the grounds of the stunning Powderham Castle, the festival promises delicious local foodie treats and a fantastic fun-filled family day out for all ages.

Dartmouth Food Festival (18-20 October)

Dartmouth is the perfect setting for what has been described as a ‘feast for the senses’.  A first class feast of entertainment featuring workshops, seminars, tastings, competitions, demonstrations and over 120 hand-picked exhibitors (70% of which are from Devon), it truly is the very best that the South West has to offer. Described in The Telegraph as a ‘heady mix of celebrity chefs, parties, food markets, tasting shacks and demonstrations’, the festival is now a landmark event on the culinary calendar. What gives us extra stand out is the fact that we’re a free festival. Anyone and everyone is welcome to come along and take part without being charged an entry fee.
