Fantastic Free Days Out for Kids in Devon!

This beautiful corner of England, with its fresh air, mild weather and lush green landscape, certainly proves that the best things in life are free. On a Devon family holiday, you’ll find plenty of places to take the kids that won’t cost you a penny.

Our pick of Devon’s free days out for kids includes so much to see and do that you’ll be able to keep your family entertained throughout your holiday without breaking the bank.

Enjoy the Great Outdoors at Dawlish’s Brand New Park

Dawlish Countryside Park had its grand opening, attended by hundreds of people, in early September. The picturesque 65-acre park (the same size as 26 rugby pitches!) features walking routes, wildflower grassland, and woodland, making it an ideal place to explore on holiday. Have adventures in the countryside with the kids and make amazing memories!

There’s surely no better way to ‘get away from it all’ and spend quality time with your loved ones than by enjoying the great outdoors. With plenty of open space and stunning scenery, Dawlish Countryside Park is the perfect setting for picnics, playing games, walking the dog, running, flying kites and more. Don’t miss the panoramic views from Ridge Path! Will you spot a cirl bunting, one of the South West’s most distinctive birds?

The park is completely free; visitors don’t even need to pay to leave their cars there. Situated between Eastdon Wood and Exeter Road, this family attraction is only half an hour’s walk – or less than a ten-minute drive – from our Dawlish Warren holiday accommodation.

More Free Family Attractions in the Devon Countryside

Like Dawlish’s new park, the attractions below can be relied on to keep youngsters amused and don’t charge admission fees. Which ones will you visit?

Meet the Gruffalo at Haldon Forest Park

If you go down to the woods today, you’re sure of a big surprise… No, not the teddy bears’ picnic but something much more exciting! Follow the augmented-reality trail at Haldon Forest Park near Exeter to see if your kids can spot much-loved children’s book character the Gruffalo! The park, which has free entry and covers 3,500 amazing acres, offers a whole series of walking routes. Look out for the bird-of-prey viewpoint and Jurassic Coast views!

Make a Splash at Decoy Country Park

Children who like to make a splash will love the water play area at Newton Abbot’s free family favourite, Decoy Country Park. While your kids have fun with jets and sprays, you can relax on a bench nearby, drinking in the scenery. Decoy’s adventure playground, which has everything from a zip wire to mini-castle, is also a big hit with little visitors. What’s more, the whole family will be inspired by the Wildlife Discovery Centre and woodland walk. Afterwards, tuck into a waterside picnic – Decoy Lake is unforgettable.

Pretend to be Pirates at The Den

If you’re looking for a free kids’ day out on the gorgeous Devon coast, look no further than The Den in Teignmouth. Its interactive wet play area and modern playground are as bright and colourful as the flower displays! Little ones can let their imaginations run wild on the pirate ship and space net, while the games area and dinosaur-themed golf course will keep their older brothers and sisters entertained.

Travel in Time at Geoplay Park

Paignton’s free Geoplay Park certainly has the wow factor. Its four zones – Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian and Quaternary – represent key periods in the area’s geological history and are aimed at different age groups, from toddlers to teens. Swinging over a prehistoric sea, climbing the Variscan mountains, dashing through a time tunnel – it’s all possible at Geoplay! The park is, in the words of a recent visitor, ‘wonderful for the kids.’

Welcome Family’s first-class holiday park in South Devon is close to all of these free family attractions and more. Simply book your stay online or call us on 03451 656265.
