Let’s Get Involved in the Great British Clean!

At the start of the year many volunteer campaigns had to be put on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak. Thankfully, having had time to adjust many have found new ways to continue with these projects whilst keeping us all safe.

Two campaigns that are closest to our hearts here at Welcome Family is the Great British Beach Clean and for those of you who live further from the beach, the Great British Clean.

Both of these campaigns have now been relaunched so that we can still take part whilst practising social distancing.

The Great British Beach Clean

The classic Great British Beach Clean has been tackling pollution in our seas and oceans for 26 years. Their work has had some incredible effects on litter including the plastic bag charge, better wet wipe labelling and banning microplastics in personal care.

Over 300 tonnes of litter has been collected so far on these beach cleans – that’s the equivalent of three Blue Whales in weight!

The Great British Beach Clean is running from 18th – 25th September this year and rather than encouraging us to find a beach clean near us, they are asking that we ‘adopt’ a 100m stretch of beach and organise cleans in groups of no more than 6 or our support bubbles.

Details on how you can log your efforts to be part of the research can be found on their website here.

The Great British Spring Clean

The organisers of the Great British Spring Clean – originally planned for 20 March – 13 April this year – were astounded by the huge support it received from local authorities, businesses, volunteers and charities.

More than 680,000 volunteers pledged to give their time meaning it was set to be one of the biggest cleans so far. Once the coronavirus outbreak came, the campaign was postponed but is now back and better than ever!

Now we can get involved with the Great British September Clean by either organising a private clean up with 5 other family or friends or we can pledge to do our own individual clean up by giving as little as 15 minutes to the campaign.

Whilst this may not seem a lot – when we all get together and do a little something – it really can achieve the incredible!

You can go online to register to be part of the research – maybe simply pledge to take part when you are out with the dog or walking the little ones to school – it’s all going to make a difference!

The Great British September Clean is from 11-27 September 2020, you can find out more and register your pledge here on the website

Both of these campaigns have details on how you can participate safely and during these difficult times – it’s good to know that together we can still do something great!
