The wild moorlands of Dartmoor National Park have inspired people for centuries and it’s easy to see why. Covered in a vast expanse of gorse and heather, the undulating hills and spectacular tors stretch as far as the eye can see. With some of the most unspoilt villages in the country, and home to hardy breeds of sheep and cattle and, of course, the famous Dartmoor ponies, it’s truly the jewel in Devon’s crown.

South Devon features historic market towns surrounded by coasts and countryside, each boasting a rich and ancient heritage. Devon’s capital city, Exeter, is a must-see with its magnificent Cathedral and charming Quayside.

Even the glorious days of summer can have the odd rainy spell, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! We have compiled a list of fantastic indoor places to visit when the weather sends everyone running for shelter. So it doesn’t matter if you are an animal lover, a cave explorer, a museum goer or a dinosaur enthusiast – we’ve got you covered, literally!

Historical Castles

Who doesn’t love to roam drafty castle corridors, imagining what it was like in days gone by? With over 600 years of history within its walls, Powderham Castle is one of Devon’s oldest family homes. There’s also Berry Pomeroy Castle – purported to be haunted – which is part majestic ruin, with a Tudor mansion built within the earlier castle. It’s dog friendly too.

Go Dolphin Watching

What could be better than combining a holiday in beautiful South Devon with spotting some of the most intelligent and playful creatures on Earth? Sometimes you can spot them from land, so keep your binoculars handy. Or better still, take a dedicated boat trip. If you’re really lucky you might even get to see an Orca!
