Delicious South Devon Food & Drink: Tasty Treats to Try on Holiday

Thanks to our lush landscape, beautiful coastline and balmy weather, some of the world’s best food and drink is found in South Devon. The popularity of farmers’ markets here pays tribute to the high quality of local produce, as does the enviable array of cafes, delicatessens, restaurants and farm shops.

Famous Culinary Delights

Holidaymakers in this gorgeous part of the country can’t fail to be impressed by its outstanding culinary heritage. To whet your appetite before your South Devon family holiday, here’s our guide to the area’s most famous food and drink. Yummy!

Fresh Fish and Seafood

Coastal towns such as Brixham are renowned for the quality of their fish and seafood. Whether you visit a traditional fish & chip shop or fine-dining restaurant, you’ll find fish and seafood dishes with that unbeatable ‘just caught’ taste! Delicacies include crab, lobster, mussels and oysters.

Marvellous Beef and Lamb

Grazed on fertile, rich land, South Devon cattle produce world-class beef. They’ve been farmed successfully here for around 400 years. Locally sourced lamb is also highly regarded. That means whether you tuck into beef burgers, lamb chops or a similar dish, you’re bound to love the taste.

Luxurious Clotted Cream, Ice Cream and Cheese

The abundance of pastureland also leads to wonderfully luxurious milk, which is perfect for indulgent clotted cream and ice cream. One of the most popular places to buy them both, Gay’s Creamery, is just up the road from our holiday accommodation in Dawlish Warren!

South Devon has a long history of artisan cheese-making; notable cheeses include Totnes-made Sharpham Brie and Quicke’s Double Devonshire Clothbound Cheddar from Exeter.

Tangy Fruit Drinks

‘Scrumpy’ (a type of cider) is the most famous local beverage. This tangy alcoholic drink has been popular for hundreds of years – it’s often made with apples from gorgeous, historic orchards. As a tremendous variety of fruit is grown locally, cordials are also popular.

Sweet Treats

Who can resist melt-in-the mouth fudge made from clotted cream? Local confectionery shops offer flavours as diverse as raspberry swirl and sea salt!

Of course, no holiday here would be complete without a traditional cream tea. Nothing compares to soft Devonshire splits (or scones) covered in juicy jam and clotted cream. For a truly authentic Devonshire cream tea, remember to put the cream on first!
