Nothing says ‘family fun’ quite like a long walk, altogether. That means the dog, too. The beaches in Devon are beloved by visitors and locals alike; this is a guide to the best dog friendly beaches in Devon that will help you explore this magical coastline with the family pet in tow.
Here at Welcome Family, we know that some holidays just aren’t complete without your furry best friend to come along, sometimes it can work out super expensive to leave them behind in kennels, too. Welcome Family offer pet friendly accommodation for the whole family to enjoy!
Soar Mill Cove
Soar Mill Cove is one of the most recognisable landscapes in Devon. To get to this dog friendly beach Devon, you will need to trace down the grassy slopes that shield the natural bay from wind. In the summer months, or whenever the sky is blue, the shallow water in the cove takes on a fantastic turquoise colour. When the tide is out, a sandy mound can sometimes appear in the cove, perfect for fetch, playing and beach fun. During the winter or colder months, this is fantastic, dramatic landscape – don’t forget your camera!
Dawlish Warren Beach
Dawlish Warren Beach is a long strip of seemingly endless white sand and flat sea. Unfortunately, like many dog friendly beaches in Devon, this is a restricted beach, and dog access is only permitted in off-peak times. However, it is worth a mention, and highly commended, because of the surrounding area. You can choose to extend your walk along the coastal path. This is a fun, explorative walk and can be rounded off with drinks in the town, not far from the beach. Welcome Family’s South Devon Holiday Park is also extremely close by, too!
Teignmouth River Beach
This lovely strip of landscape is only a couple of miles from one of the other dog friendly beaches in Devon, mentioned above, Dawlish Warren. To really blow the cobwebs out you could connect the two, slowly traipsing along the south coast pathway. Teignmouth River Beach is a year-round alternative to Dawlish Warren, as pets are welcome at any time. The quality of the beach itself depends on the weather and the tides at the time, but the fresh, seaside atmosphere is revitalising, perfect for the whole family to enjoy!
Babbacombe Beach
Babbacombe beach is on the north side of the peninsula where you could find Torquay. The beaches are much smaller, but this cove is much quieter. The small, sanded beach is picturesque no matter what direction you look in: from the lush greenery hugging the cliffside to the red rock and beautiful blue sea to look over. Babbacome Beach one of the best dog walking beaches in Devon. You can walk around the tip of the coast, traversing between the shoreline and the awesome, low cliffs. See if you and the kids can find the hidden Babbacombe waterfall, too!
If you are interested in dog friendly beaches in Devon where you can enjoy a meal afterwards (without abandoning your pet), you can check out Three Degrees West and other bistro eateries along the front.
Goodrington Sands
Godrington Sands is all about family fun, and is one of the favourite dog friendly beaches in Devon. Perfect whatever the weather, this beach is expansive, perfect for ball games (with the kids or the dog) and plenty of running around! This is a fantastic stretch of pure sand, if you want to extend the walk, you wander around to Oyster Cove.
Shoalsone Beach
This is one of the most picturesque dog friendly beaches in Devon. The white sand-shell beach contrasts with the bright turquoise of the water. The shoal beach is rocky, but perfect for if you are feeling adventurous. You can walk along the boardwalk to the lighthouse (dogs are still welcome)! Again, you can follow the coast around to Churston Cove for a cultural beach walk.
