Enjoy Plymouth – sights, attractions and interesting things to do

An Amazing Day Trip to Plymouth on the Train

Just an hour away on the train from Welcome Family’s Holiday Park is the lovely, lively and historic coastal city of Plymouth. Take the kids for a day out to enjoy the sights and attractions, but don’t fear, because for the discerning adult there’s the Plymouth Gin Distillery to visit too! And with a day return on Great Western Railways costing just £7.90 (autumn 2018), who wouldn’t want to take an amazing day trip to Plymouth? Here are some of the fun things to see and do in and around the city.

The Barbican

The Barbican is the heart and soul of Plymouth. This is the most historic part of the city, a place steeped in myth and legend with many a story to tell. Uncover the secrets of Plymouth, while enjoying the beautiful waterfront location that’s lined with old buildings and modern shops and restaurants.

Take a cruise on the harbour, sit back and enjoy some refreshments in a café or make the kids happy with a trip to the local aquarium. There’s lots to do in the Barbican, and you may quickly find that you need to make a second amazing day trip to see it all!

Plymouth Hoe

Plymouth Hoe is a stunning place to visit. Don’t miss this beautiful part of the city, because if you do, you’re guaranteed to regret it!

Hoe Park is a lovely green space that looks right out over Plymouth’s historic harbour and across the English Channel. Sir Francis Drake, the famous English sailor, used to play bowls here, and ever since it’s been one of the foremost leisure attractions in Plymouth.

Enjoy the verdant grass and admire the spectacular lighthouse that dominates the skyline. In summer, you can even take the kids for a swim at Tinside, the huge outdoor pool that’s right on the sea.

Drake Circus

Drake Circus is the best shopping centre in Plymouth and the best place to keep everyone entertained for the day.

You can find all the shops you might ever need and more at Drake Circus, and you can keep the kids entertained in toy stores and on the odd attraction that’s found here.

With plenty of restaurants, you might want to eat out too, so why not treat yourself and the family to a great meal once everyone is all shopped out?

Plymouth Gin Tour

This one is for the adults. After a long day out you may well have rightly earned a Plymouth Gin Tour. This famous brand is one of the most loved gins in the UK, and at their distillery in the Barbican you can take a grand tour of their historic premises.

Plymouth Gin has been crafting great spirits since 1793, so you can rest assured they know how to mix up a refreshing drink. After the tour, sit back and unwind with a few tastings of their best offerings.

Could this be the most amazing part of a day trip to Plymouth? Definitely!
